Carcer's sitting in the cafe looking more than a bit confused. He ought to be dead, he's sure of it. He remembers dying. He remembers feeling the floor drop out from under his boots and the rope pull tight around his neck....
Damn. His neck...now that he's thinking about it, it does kind of hurt. Probably bruised pretty bad, too.
Damn.
If he's dead, then is this some kind of afterlife? Everybody else in here seems prettly lively to him. If he's not dead...right now, he's almost hoping he is. Because that might actually make sense.
Gods, he could use a beer. Or three.

((So, who's up for explanations? .D))

It was by, of course, complete coincidence that JT happened to drop by the café very shortly after Carcer sat down. She was skipping over to him before the door even closed (almost as if she already knew he was there, but that was silly; coincidence, remember?) and she grinned hugely. "Hi, Mister Dun!"

Without asking, she settled herself into a chair next to him.

Hey, look, it's that girl from...earlier. She'll know what's going on here, right?

"Hey, kid." Somehow, he manages to grin without actually looking happy. "I was hopin' you'd come back in here. I don't really know anybody else here, see, and honestly I haven't even got a clue where here is. You wouldn't mind showin' me around, haha, would you?"

Obviously pleased at the request, she giggles and begins to bounce in her seat. "I'd be happy to! Where would you like me to start?"

"You could start by tellin' me what sort o' place this is, if it ain't the Disc."

He hesitates for a moment, but continues--for some reason, he gets the feeling that there's not a lot this girl would consider 'weird'.

"See, before I turned up here, I--I think I died. But now I'm up and walkin' about in this place, and...well, this ain't some kind of afterlife, is it?"

This would be Earth. It's actually quite similar to the Disc in some aspects, but... well, different in several others. The best way I can describe it is that the Disc is a lot like Earth was a couple hundred years ago." She pauses. "Also this planet is round."

Carcer had guessed right; the question seems perfectly reasonable to JT.

"Oh no, this isn't an afterlife. I don't know what happened to you, but you're certainly alive now. Unless you're a zombie, which would be kind of neat. Both of my parents were dead, too, you know." Oddly enough, she seems perfectly cheerful about this fact.

"So...this is sorta like time travel, then? Well, I've done that</em> before, so I'm probably gonna do all right here, too, haha. You think the Watch round here'd take on a new recruit?" He pauses for a moment, looking around the cafe. "It don't seem like I'll be goin' home anytime soon, so unless I can sleep in here I guess I'll be needin' to find a place to stay." He leers. "Ain't got a spare room at home, have you?"

He may be a psychopath, but Carcer's pretty good at reading people.

"It's not? Probably all for the best, haha. What happened to your dads, then?" He pulls his collar open a bit and indicates his neck. "I got hanged, meself. Ain't been able to find a mirror yet--d'you see any bruises?"

"I suppose you could think of it like that, though that's definitely simplifying it." She shrugs. "And I couldn't say. I don't generally interact with the police if I can help it."

At the question, JT giggles, a slightly higher-pitched one than before, and fiddles with her sleeves. "I'm afraid not, Mister Dun. Besides, I don't think Nny likes you very much. You could always stay at a hotel, however."

"Nny killed himself, I believe, and Daddy was run through with a fireplace poker." She scowls suddenly, an expression that seems to suit her just as well as the smile did. "Some stupid bitch named Susan's fault." The scowl fades as she examines Carcer's neck. "Oh yes, those are some nasty ones. That must've hurt." Her hands twitch, as if she had been about to touch them and decided not to.

"O'course, you'll have to help me with figurin' out all the new stuff that musta come about by now, if it's all like what you say." He points up at the ceiling, at the lights. "Like those...things...up there. Are they some kinda weird candles, or do they work on magic or somethin'?"

"Nothing's ever easy, haha, is it?" He gives her another leering grin. "Think you could help me find a hotel 'round here then? And I'll have to get some money, somewhere, but somehow I don't think that'll be too difficult, haha."

"Poker, huh? I always said those things were dangerous. And, yeah, it hurt. The bit I remember, at least. Think I could find a scarf or somethin' around here?"

((What would you say to a Carcer/JT Coffee Run sort of thing? XD I'm only gonna be able to stay on twenty more minutes max, but maybe tomorrow...?))

She glances at the indicated lights. "Those are lightbulbs, and they run on electricity. Very little that I've seen here works on magic; that's one of the bigger differences between this place and the Disc."

"Oh, I believe I could do that." She tilts her head at the comment about getting money, but doesn't say anything.

"I don't have one on me, but I don't think it would be very hard to find one. Why do you want to cover it up, though? I think it looks neat."

((Dude, I'd love that! XD Also eeheehe is that a Red Eye reference I see thar?))

"So they're like...little jars full of lightning?" He furrows his brows, befuddled. "And no magic at all? Weird."

He grins again and gestures toward the door. "Lead the way, then. Unless you don't wanna come along while I'm, haha, findin' the money..."

"I just don't wanna attract too much attention. Not exactly convenient for a bloke like me, if you know what I mean, haha."

"...sort of but not really. I'm not entirely sure how to explain it, though I always find taking things apart helps me to understand them better." She smiles at the thought.

She jumps out of her seat and skips to the door, pulling it open and waiting for Carcer to follow. "Oh no, I'd love to come. I'd like to see just how you go about acquiring this money."

"I can undertand not wanting to attract attention. I still think it looks neat."

((Also, I feel like I should mention that I GIGGLE HORRIBLY every time I see that icon.))

Carcer follows JT through the door and takes a few steps down the street, then stops quite suddenly. Grabbing her by the shoulder, he points out into the street at the cars. "Uh, JT? What are those?"

Startled at the sudden touch, it takes JT a moment to realize what he's talking about. Then she giggles. "Those would be cars. It's the main mode of transportation here, though I prefer to walk." She looks up at the sky. "I can't wait until you see a plane. Are there planes on the Disc? I can't remember."

"Cars. Right, then...and they don't run on magic either, right? They run on light-uh, electricity? Damn, this is some afterlife." He grins. "Can't say that I know what a plane is, either, Miss, so I'd guess we don't have those either."

There's a rather stylishly-dressed woman walking out of a shop a few doors down, and even in his confusion Carcer doesn't fail to notice her. He nudges JT again and points her out. "Well, whaddaya know...I think I've just found me a scarf, haha."

"Nope, they run on gasoline. Well, some run on electricity. Some also run on solar power. Confused yet?"

While thievery is not something JT exactly approves of, she'd be lying if she said she wasn't excited. And as long as she's not the one doing the theiving, she can't really bring herself to care all that much. "That was quick, wasn't it? Told you it wouldn't be that hard." She beams at him.

"Oh, yeah." Smiley, smiley, grin, grin. "But, y'know, I don't think it really matters, does it?"

He grabs JT's arm again, still smiling like mad, and weaves through the crowd in the direction the woman was heading.

She grins right back. "I suppose not."

Briefly, she considers removing the hand, but after a moment she decides that she really does not mind. Besides, the promise of Fun Stuff soon is enough to take her mind off of anything else.

He takes the hand off, anyway--he's got her attention now. When they come up beside the woman, he taps her shoulder. She turns to look at him, and he grins.

"Nice scarf, ma'am, haha."

She jumps, startled at the touch, and gives the strange man an embarrassed half-smile, trying not to stare at his bruises.

"Um, thanks?"

There's a glint of metal in his hand, and he's pulling something out of his sleeve, but she doesn't seem to notice....

((Um, keep in mind that they're still out in the middle of the street right now. Carcer, of course, has no problem with this. XD))

JT stands about a foot away, watching with her head tilted to the side and a very wide smile on her face. She begins to bounce in place, excited, just barely managing not to giggle.

And while she's perfectly content to watch Carcer acquire his new scarf on his own, she rests a hand on the hilt of a breadknife concealed at her hip. Just in case she changes her mind.

((Ahaha, I totally forgot about that. XD I believe JT doesn't care either.))

Carcer's hand lashes out, and before the woman can start to scream there's a knife ripping through her throat. The blood that spatters her white jacket and skirt seems almost unnaturally red; on Carcer's face and hands and shirt, it's just another grubby stain.

Of course, since this REALLY isn't Ankh-Morpork, the other people in the street don't just stand there and watch the lady get attacked. As Carcer pulls the scarf off her neck and the knife out of it, one man who hasn't run away starts running towards him...

((Look it's PaulKidby!BookCover!Carcer. At first I didn't like his design, but it's growing on me. .D))

Clapping in delight, JT watches the woman's face avidly. There's something about that sort of expression that's just so entertaining.

And the panic that ensues is just another part of the fun. While people don't normally run towards her like this, it's not completely unusual, and she's prepared. In an instant the knife is in her hand and, with practiced ease, jammed into the man's stomach. Then his lung. Then his eye.

((YAHOO NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT THIS WHAT THE HELL. I'm getting so pissed at yahoo. >( Sorry. Anyway eeehee BookCover!Carcer .D <3 I still like your version better~))

As the man begins to fold up, Carcer turns to JT and grins. "Haha, thanks."

The knife disappears again; he holds out the scarf, examines it critically for a moment, and wraps it loosely round his neck. "So," he says as he lifts the woman's purse off the sidewalk, "we gonna find that hotel or what?"
